Students receive primary or elementary education from kindergarten through fifth grade. After that, secondary and post-secondary education comprise the education that a student receives. Together, secondary education and post-secondary education for some, propel students into adulthood and aims to give them necessary career skills.

Middle and high school years, between sixth and twelfth grade, are when secondary education takes place. Courses in secondary education include English, mathematics, social studies, science and foreign language. Public secondary education is free and available in the U.S. It is also compulsory through the age of 16.
Post-secondary education is also known as tertiary education. It is any educational program that takes place after you complete your secondary education, which are community college, professional certification, undergraduate education, and graduate school. Unlike secondary education, post-secondary education allows students to concentrate on subjects that most interest them.
When a student finishes a secondary education, they are ready to either continue on to post-secondary education or enter into a vocation career that does not require formal study. If students pursue a post-secondary education, they can develop skills and expertise that can be applied in later professional careers. They can go to technical schools that provide mostly employment preparation skills for trained labor, such as welding, culinary arts, and office management. Or they can also pursue a bachelorâs degree that takes three to five years of study depending on the institution and field of study.
Although secondary education is free in the U.S., income inequality affects the quality of public education such that children from low-income families sometimes attend poorly performing, less funded schools. In effect, their opportunity to pursue a post-secondary education is also affected. If students wish to choose further studies, this can post academic and financial struggles.
